Ottawa has four beaches, all run by the City of Ottawa, which carefully monitors the water quality. Britannia Beach, on the west end of Ottawa, offers residents a relaxed day for soaking up the sun and picnicking, as well as swimming. Mooney's Bay is the most popular, with nearby tennis courts, snack vendors and a play area for the kids. Westboro Beach is the smallest beach, in a residential community. It is adjacent to the Ottawa River, making it unique. The newest beach is on Petrie Island, which has lifeguard, a small restaurant for snacks, changing rooms and plenty of sand space for castles and umbrellas.
